Hear It on Sunday, Use It on Monday: Chasing after Wind (or a new shade of lipstick)

Use It on Monday
Did you see the advertising fliers this weekend, spilling
from your Sunday paper? These were the slogans I caught screaming
from the colorful pages: Must Have Shoes! Best And so on.
And on the same day here’s what I read from Jesus: “One’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.” (Luke 12:15)
Hmmm. Sounds like a contradiction to me. On one hand we have the media’s pleas for consumerism blaring at us from all directions, and on the other hand, Jesus, who tells us that our possessions mean nothing.
To be honest, I usually blame someone or something else, anything so I don’t have to take responsibility: “But I can’t help that I want, want, want…it’s society…I’m bombarded by messages cajoling me into spending and consuming. It’s not my fault!”
But consider this line from Proverbs:
“Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control.” (Proverbs 25: 28)
We all have the power, the ability, to say no. It’s called self-control. It’s a God-given gift.
We can say no to overspending. We can say no to overconsumption. We can say no to materialism and greed. We can say no to impulse buying. It’s just takes self-control.
My pastor once cited a startling statistic in a sermon. He noted that American’s spend $850 million every year on the purchase of ring tones. You know, the peppy Adele number you bought because the standard 15 ring tones your cell phone already comes with aren’t cool enough, or distinct enough, or edgy enough.
$850 million. On a telephone jangle.
An impulse purchase. And one that’s so easy to justify. It’s only a couple bucks right? What’s it going to hurt? It’s not like I’m buying a Lamborghini or a Swiss chalet. It’s just a ring tone.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not judging. Ask me how many shades of lipstick I have upstairs in my makeup basket right now.
There’s the “Shimmershell” I only wore once because it made me look like an Easter egg.
And the “Brandyberry” from my one-day vampy phase.
Oh and “Mauvelicious,” “Honeyplum Glow” and “French Toast.”
I’m always on the hunt for that illusive, perfect shade, the one that will transform my mouth into a Penelope Cruz pout.
Author Adam Hamilton notes that the opposite of self-control is slavery; we are enslaved by our impulses (Enough: Discovering Joy through Simplicity and Generosity). I am enslaved by my impulse to buy lipstick as well as the other dozens of impulse purchases I make every month. I’m disillusioned. I think these “things” will win me happiness, contentment, peace, security. And they don’t. They won’t. I know this in my heart…yet I still do it.
I’m still chasing after wind.
What kind of wind might you be chasing after these days?

Thanks for this timely message Michelle! Prov 25:28 was just what I needed to read right now (and not in terms of consumption - it can apply in the emotional realm as well - which of course, can relate back to consumption!) In any event, I'd love for you to share this with us at Inspire Me Monday - I'm sure there are others who would love to read your message as well!
Have a blessed week!

So true - perhaps not lipstick, but too much of other things. Chasing the wind may be fun, but it is very difficult to catch!
This is a really excellent, thought-provoking post. It's one which affects us all in this subtle advert climate we live in! You have brought out some really important truths.
I echo Create with Joy regarding sharing this post further afield... if you have time, please also consider linking up with Scripture Sunday. I'd be delighted to host a link back to this post from there too!

Great post, Michelle, on a topic that affects most of us in one way or another.
Eating meals out is an easy trap for my family to fall into. It seems so much more convenient in the midst of a busy schedule, but adds up to substantial dollars if done too often.
I think everyone can relate to this, with that one thing or things they must have. For me, probably far more things than I even realize, as I consider our third world countries. Great though-provoking post!
So is it wrong that in the reading of your post I decided I "need" one more book (Enough)? Thanks a lot, Michelle. Ha. But I'm resisting (I only got the free sample for my Kindle).
Books (i.e. knowledge) are my chasing after wind. The bad thing is that overconsumption is usually socially acceptable, but it still can be harmful. My life doesn't consist in the abundance of my knowledge....
A powerful post about 'less.' Your example has caused me over this last year to look at what I'm spending my money on and why. The quest for" more "is really, a sentence to less of the important things in life.
While I dont get the lipstick thing, I have my own Chasing after the wind. Fishing flies. Talk about variations in feathers, materials and hook sizes. And really, does it catch any more fish?
Fishing flies - that made me smile this morning, David! But it's all relative, right...lipstick shades, fishing flies...it all sounds pretty windy to me.
Yup, I've got the book thing going here, too. And having a Kindle now doesn't help - it's just so easy!
I love your points about overconsumption of knowledge. I don't think I would have realized that as chasing after wind, but you are so right...especially if we make knowledge an idol (and I know I do sometimes).
Thanks for your insightful comment here, Lisa!
Thanks, Theresa. Glad you stopped by here today.
Thanks, Wendy - I'll be by to check out Scripture Sunday later today.
You make a good point, Hazel...I think part of the allure of the chase is that it IS fun -- I get pleasure (though short-lived) out of many of the unnecessary purchases I make.
I'll be sure to check out Inspire Me Monday today - sounds like a great theme for a link-up! Thanks for stopping by here...
i find i want things like traveling, and fancy coffees, and books, more than i do clothes or makeup or furniture, but i still want things. and i doubt i'll ever be truly satisfied with Jesus unless i stop craving the material. thank you for this convicting post michelle!
Ouch! Why, as much as I believe this and want it and experience it do I walk in a store for the one thing I need and leave with several more things? And when the checker asks "Did you find everything you needed today?" I often respond in my inner voice, "MORE than I needed!" Maybe I just need to say it out loud!
I'm with Shelia..."ouch!" Just this morning as I was looking for my new moisturizer I found TWO new lipsticks...both Fancy Nancy in color...and I rarely wear lipstick. I guess I thought that color was going to make me feel better and yet they are both still in my bathroom cabinet unopened!
Great post, Michelle. Going to Sam's Club can be sobering after you begin to think about the excess in which we live, especially in light of the tremendous poverty the rest of the world suffers through.
Wow, $850 million on ringtones. That's simply stunning. I'm guilty of purchasing beyond what I need, that's for sure. However, I realize that my happiness or worth does not reside in what I own or purchase - but Who purchased me. Thanks for this great perspective today, Michelle.
So true, Michelle! So many ways we could weed out the unnecessary and spend our resources more wisely to further His kingdom. May we lay up our treasures in Heaven where we will enjoy them eternally, not on earth where they pile up or get tossed into the trash. Thanks for the great post and for hosting the linkup.
God bless,
Laurie

A funny and ohhh so insightful post! Our enemy is always looking for ways to ensnare us!
Ouch!! This self-control business in so many areas of my life. It is, I confess, my besetting sin. I will remember it's opposite from now on Michelle. Thank you. Slavery isn't something I aspire to.
Dark chocolate. Not the cheap kind, the kind that is the price of a lunch out. If I could get a grip and stop eating it, that money would do some good somewhere else I am sure! Actually after going to Rwanda, every time I go shopping I have these thoughts. What could I do with this that would change someone's life instead of buying one more thing I can live without. Thanks for a fun, insightful post.
Oh dark chocolate...I am swooning just thinking about it.
I hear you, Linda, I do. xxoo, lovely friend!
You are so right, Patsy. Thanks for stopping by - I am always delighted to see you here!
You are beautiful, Laurie - always so eloquent in your comments. Blessings to you, lovely friend.
Oh, I love how you put that Donna - "but in Who purchased me." Yes, He came as a ransom for many. Love you, lady!
Ug, Sam's Club, Costco - so much excess. I tease my mom and call her "supplies" that line a floor to ceiling shelf in the basement, "Maureen's Market." Seriously - does a retired couple really need that much in reserve? (although, I admit, I make ample use of the snack storehouse when I am in town!).
Oooooh, Fancy Nancy...sounds like a shade I need to try! ;) (although I think it should be called Fancy Fonda).
Oh me too, Sheila, me too. Target is my particular nemesis. When I did the year-long Shop Not I had to avoid that place altogether!
Books, yes. I just got a Kindle for Mother's Day and it's become my new temptation.
your words made me sigh! (wow, that much for ringtones...) and then chuckle when I read your lipstick woes...I can't think of an impulse buy off the top of my head, except maybe when I am at the Farmer's Market, or the grocery store, and I see some delicious-looking food item, that inspires me.... thanks, Michelle :)
Oh man, this has been going through my head over and over again for weeks now. I'm so tired of being a slave to my impulses, and teaching my kids to do the same thing. I'm praying through how this is going to look over the summer - I've already said I won't be buying any more clothes/shoes/accessories for the summer, but I'm thinking I'm going to extend this to other stuff, too.
