On the Front Step {day three}

A couple days ago I sat on the front step for a good long time. The sun was out and it was warm – near 70 – too warm for February in Nebraska. I know I should be worried about global warming and the end of the Earth and all that, but I can’t help but delight in these strangely balmy days when the sun glares bright-white and my jeans get hot to the touch.
Noah sat with me on the step for a while.
We sipped our tea, and he munched Red Hot Blues from the plastic robin’s egg bowl that his dad had snacked from as a kid.
We spotted a red-tailed hawk soaring above the bare elm trees, and tried to figure out whether it was a white-breasted nuthatch or a chickadee calling from deep in the pine boughs. We pondered if the two mourning doves cooing on the telephone wire were married and decided probably not, maybe only friends since they were sitting so far apart.

After a while Noah wandered into the backyard to pound rocks with Cade the neighbor boy and Rowan, because that’s what boys do.
And I laid back on the cool cement, protected from the breeze by the arborvitae tree. I listened to the echoing clink of hammer against stone and watched bare branches wave at the blue sky.

Have you been able to grab any quiet moments outside lately? What have you been seeing out there?

The 29 days of quiet sounds like a great project. Enjoying reading and living quiet moments vicariously.

I have!  I wrote about it here:

It sounds like you're having our kind of weather there.  God planned it that way.  A special blessing for us.

It has been beautifully warm in Missouri, too. I've been walking to pick the boys up from daycare. I love seeing all the kids and families out and about; walking, playing, riding bikes. When the weather is warm and people are out I feel such a strong sense of community and of belonging. We're all out enjoying God's creation!

Not only did the weather contribute to your quiet moment, but the fact that the boys were having their own moment(s) too -- with you and without you.  My quiet moments are at 6am, before anyone gets up. Dark. Moon shining through the window. Cup of coffee.

I love the picture you took of the reflection.

Your quiet moments are good for me.  Thanks for sharing!

Yesterday I watched the sunrise, turning the sky increasingly deep shades of red-violet.  But when the sun actually came up, the pink faded.  Made me think about those times when emotional pain continues to intensify and then, finally, I see God's hand in it and it all fades into HIS plan.

I love breaking from my writing sometimes and staring out into my neighbor's backyard. The grass is still lush green and there are enormous trees at the edge of his property. Even w/out leaves they are beautiful.

Yes! I've been in Colorado this week, and there have been new birds each day. The next morning, I get on a couple of websites and figure out what they are. I sense a series coming on!

Yes, I have. Took a walk around my yard with the camera and then sat on a bench and watched the birds. So rejuvenating. And I love the way you tell stories, take me to wherever you are like I am standing right there beside you! Have a great weekend enjoying some quiet Michelle.

Yes, I have.  Yesterday on my drive to Miami I drove quietly in my car.   Just me and God.  I watched the sunset.  Orange hues peekaboo through the grey stratus clouds.  I felt at peace.  I felt love.  I felt joyful.  Beautifully written post, Michelle.

Love, love, love this project, M. Thanks for each contribution - this is so good, so right for you right now. And it is a gentle reminder that it's good for ALL of us to build some kind of quiet into each day. Especially love that each day provides its own version of that.

Loved this. Thanks for sharing! Have a Blessed weekend.

You are so right -- this quiet is so good and right, right now. I am enjoying it and finding some peace. Thanks for your encouragement.

Michelle DeRusha  – (February 3, 2012 1:58 PM)

I love watching the birds. And I love walking around my backyard with a camera, too! My yard is the size of a postage stamp, but still, I am always amazed by how much beauty is there in that small space. Right now, over my shoulder out the sunroom door, a beautiful red-belly woodpecker is eating suet -- what a glimpse!

Michelle DeRusha  – (February 3, 2012 1:58 PM)

Oh yes, a series on birds, please!!

Michelle DeRusha  – (February 3, 2012 1:58 PM)

I do a lot of staring out the window, especially when I am writing.

Michelle DeRusha  – (February 3, 2012 1:59 PM)

I'm glad you are benefitting from this, too, Mary! Happy weekend to you...

Michelle DeRusha  – (February 3, 2012 2:06 PM)

A very good metaphor for me right now, Sheila. Thank you for that.

Michelle DeRusha  – (February 3, 2012 2:06 PM)

I feel peaceful just reading your description, Joan.

Michelle DeRusha  – (February 3, 2012 2:08 PM)

I need to start doing that -- getting up early again. Since Brad's in Mn with his dad, I've been staying up too late and sleeping in more. But I do relish that early hour of dark quiet...and coffee.

Michelle DeRusha  – (February 3, 2012 2:09 PM)

Heading over to read your thoughts right now, Renee.

Michelle DeRusha  – (February 3, 2012 4:07 PM)

Thanks, Gery...glad to have you along, even vicariously.

Deidra  – (February 3, 2012 5:09 PM)

I love the weather we've been having (even the crazy storm prediction for today), and I know I should probably be concerned but I've decided just to live in the moment. If the world is ending, I want to enjoy every moment - right up until the very end.

Have I told you I love Noah? And Rowan? And my favorite part of this whole thing was the robin's egg bowl.

Jennifer@GDWJ  – (February 3, 2012 6:11 PM)

I love your neighborhood. I can tell. When can I come visit?

Linda Chontos –   – (February 3, 2012 8:47 PM)

I'm right there with you Michelle.  I'm looking for my voice these days, but enjoying the quiet.

Jana | GraceForMyMess.com  – (February 3, 2012 9:54 PM)

This post was like a breath of fresh air, Michelle. It's so nice to sit back, sip tea and watch the birds with you and your son.  I think I'll hum a bit of a hymn too, if you don't mind - but softly, so as not to disturb the doves.

Thank you for sharing this quiet moment.  I think it was just what I needed.

Lovely blue sky...
Trying to grab quiet time, and when I grab it I get fidgety.
I even have 'sit still' on my to-do list today :-)
