Rainbow Rocks

Rocks are all the rage at our house right now. This is the second time in one week that I’ve blogged about rocks, so noting that they are all the rage right now is something of an understatement.
But what could be more perfect than this: a quiet October afternoon, warm enough to be outside, but cool enough for a sweater. A vat of magic markers. And a whole garden path full of rocks just begging for a splash of color.
I colored rocks, too. I sat on the path with Noah and Rowan, and time slowed as we methodically filled in every crevice with magenta, sunflower and emerald. We were quiet. Concentrating. Noah pointed out a chickadee calling from the nearby elm tree. He chatted about our “pet” Jumpy Squirrel, how Jumpy had a wife now and a baby, as acorns dropped from the oak tree above our heads. Rowan was silent. A blessing in itself.
In the end, the boys did earn a bit of money (thanks to the generosity of Miss Marge and Karna – thank God for kind-hearted neighbors), and they gave away a few for free.
And the rest of the rocks? They’re scattered around the house, of course. One sits on my bedside table, “I love you” penned on its uneven surface in scarlet. I expect most will make their way to the bottom of the washing machine.

I love the way your afternoon that was warm enough to be outside but cold enough for a sweater unfurled slowly and gently! And I know I just totally quoted you there without using quotes, but you have so beautifully captured what unwrapping Tuesday is ALL ABOUT.
thank you.
Oh. This story touched my heart, especially since you punctuated it with the beautiful photo of your red-head. My boys are all red-heads. We don't do much with rocks any more. . .my oldest just started college. . . but oh! the fun we used to have with them. I remember once spray-painting a bunch of gravel gold so that they could use it as pirate's treasure.
There's nothing like a little boy.
So sweet! Little boys and rocks...the perfect combination.
I adore this post...I remember coloring rocks as a child and loving it! My kids too LOVE to collect rocks, you have given me a great idea to do with my little ones. Thank you for writing!
Yes, rocks are all the rage here, too. It's amazing how our kids can take something cold, hard and gray and bring it to life!
I've pulled quite a few rocks out of the dryer too! That's a great idea for my 3 year old... collect smooth beach rocks and color them. Thanks! =)
I want to do that. Color rocks on an October afternoon. In silent concentration. Beautiful.
I love that you sat down and colored rocks with them instead of taking advantage of the quiet moment to hop online or do the laundry. You being present with them was a gift to all of you.
I love the imagery of sitting outside gathering and coloring rocks. I'd head out with my boys right now if it wasn't raining. :)
This is what makes the best memories, the best teaching moments, the best of our days.
I've never even thought of coloring rocks, but we're definitely going to try it!
We are big rock lovers over here, so I'll have to store that idea in the back of my head for a day when we need to sit down together. Glad you had a wonderful moment :)
my favorite weather...warm enough to be outside, cool enough for a sweater. wonderful.
"Colorful rocks for free!" That is unbelievably precious. This whole post made me smile, relaxed me just a bit more, inspired me to slow down. Thank you!!
i'm smiling just thinking about you standing there fishing rocks out of the bottom of the washer... and unwrapping the day all over again.
